Ignorance

The National Day of Prayer really got some people on their high horse once again. The group includes the usual “Trump Deranged Syndrome” (TDS) crowd, atheists, and those ignorant of American history. The phrase “separation of church and state” was flying freely amongst this minority group showing how little they know about our country and its Constitution.

A quick reminder, the first settlers were Puritans, a religious group that had been persecuted in England, fled to other parts of Europe before finally setting sale for America in their quest to be allowed to practice their religion as they saw fit. This to counter then England’s state sponsored and forced Church of England (Anglican). The resistance to a government imposed religion is at the heart of the “separation of church and state” and nowhere does it suggest no religion within government.

Indeed, our Founders saw God as the central figure in our lives and exercising His will through governing. It is He who gives us life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That last statement’s meaning has also be co-opted by the same group opposing any reference to religion by the state. It does not mean hedonism as is hoped by the illiterate. It is meant that pure happiness is found in virtue grounded in faith in a higher being. It means, living a virtuous life results in real happiness. It fills the void of an empty life that ends with a sad, “is that all there is?”. It was included in the Declaration of Independence as the bedrock characteristic sought in those that would govern and those being governed.

It is clear that those with TDS exhibit anger at any mention of Trump of anything related to him. Because they are consumed with hate, they cannot see the deleterious impact it is having on their lives. Its worse results have been the fragmenting of relationships even between parent and child. Having no faith in a higher being of their choice, there is no permanent guiding fixture in their lives. The coursing through life becomes meandering from one fad to the next, one “outrage” to the next, another lost friend or family member and on.

When you have nothing permanent, divorce is normal, single parenting is fine, packing the Supreme Court to get your way is a must, interpreting the Constitution like it really didn’t mean what it says, and dismissing anything that doesn’t comport with your own views, is easily understood. You’re my friend today but you can be cast aside when my mood fits me.

No, the United States of America has no official religion but it has faith in God at its core and even atheists should acknowledge the strength it provides for keeping our country pointed in the right direction….especially when we go off course.
